Visa Application
Step 1: Review Your Immigration Document
After receiving your admission letter from MSU Billings and your I-20 or DS-2019 please verify that all information on your Form I-20 (F-1) or Form DS-2019 (J-1) is correct and matches your passport.
Print and sign your form.
Step 2: Pay the I-901 SEVIS Fee
Next, you must pay the I-901 SEVIS fee.
- F-1 students: $350
- J-1 students: $220
Pay the fee at:
This fee is paid to the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVIS), part of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
After payment:
- Print and save your receipt
- You will need your SEVIS ID, located on your I-20 or DS-2019
Step 3: Complete the DS-160 Visa Application
Complete the DS-160 form online through the U.S. Department of State.
- Upload a passport-style photo
- Submit the form
- Print and save the confirmation page
You must also pay the non-refundable visa application fee (amount varies by country).
Step 4: Schedule Your Visa Interview
Make an appointment at your nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

Step 5: Prepare Required Documents
Bring the following to your visa interview:
- Valid passport
- Form I-20 or DS-2019 (signed by you and your school)
- DS-160 confirmation page
- SEVIS fee receipt
- Visa application fee receipt
- Passport photo (if required)
- Financial documentation (proof of funding for tuition and living expenses)
- Academic records (transcripts, test scores)
Step 6: Attend Your Visa Interview
During your interview, a consular officer may ask about:
- Your study plans
- Your chosen school
- Your financial support
- Your intent to return home after your program
Answer clearly, honestly, and concisely.
After the interview:
- If approved: The embassy or consulate will keep your passport to issue the visa and return it to you (in person or by mail).
- If additional processing is required: You will be notified of next steps.
Step 7: Travel to the United States
F-1 and J-1 students may enter the U.S. up to 30 days before the program start date listed on their I-20 or DS-2019.
