Henry Real Bird

Visting Scholar Week: March 24th- 28th

Henry Real Bird, a Crow poet and educator, was born and raised on the Crow Indian Reservation by his grandparents, Mark and Florence Real Bird. Speaking Crow as his primary language, he infuses his poetry with the rhythm and traditions of his heritage.

A former saddle bronc rider, Real Bird turned to writing after a rodeo injury, drawing inspiration from classic poets like Longfellow and Thoreau. He earned degrees from Montana State University Bozeman and MSU Billings, later publishing six anthologies, four poetry collections, and twelve children's books.

From 2009 to 2011, he served as Montana鈥檚 Poet Laureate, famously riding 415 miles on horseback to distribute poetry books. A Western Heritage Award recipient, he continues to share his work at cowboy poetry gatherings, celebrating the fusion of Crow culture and the cowboy spirit.
